Richard Williams gave masterclasses at Encounters in 2008 and 2009, drawing on his legendary Animator's Survival Kit and a career spanning more than fifty years. The festival celebrated his 80th birthday in 2013 with a career retrospective and Desert Island Flicks with Phill Jupitus. His final short, Prologue, screened at Encounters 2015 and again in 2019.
Williams won three Academy Awards, including two for Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He died at his home in Bristol in 2019. He was a great friend to the festival and his presence is much missed.
