John Smith has had sixteen films at Encounters across twenty-six years, from The Waste Land at Brief Encounters 1999 to Being John Smith at Encounters 2025. He has worked consistently in the short form, and few filmmakers' work at the festival runs deeper.

He was in Bristol in 2005 for a Filmmaker Focus with Mark Cosgrove. Blight, his collaboration with composer Jocelyn Pook, has screened at four editions, most recently at the 30th in 2025. The 2007 catalogue put it plainly: "for my money John Smith should be the patron saint of short film."
