Encounters 24 · Bristol

Encounters 2018

476 films from 54 countries are recorded in the archive for this edition, with 11 award winners.

The festival presented an exceptionally strong international selection with Jeremy Comte's Fauve, which went on to receive an Academy Award nomination, and Charlotte Wells' Blue Christmas, another early short from the future Aftersun director. Philip Barantini's Boiling Point screened — a short he would later expand into a feature before directing the 2025 Netflix phenomenon Adolescence. A Georgian focus brought work from Rati Tsiteladze, Data Phirtskalava and Davit Takaishvili, while the VR/immersive strand included Sanctuaries of Silence, Google's Back to the Moon, and Tidal Traces. The animation programme featured Nikita Diakur's Fest, Martina Scarpelli's Egg, Špela Čadež's Steakhouse and Joanna Quinn's long-awaited return with a preview reel.
