LetterboxdJoanna Quinn introduced a retrospective of her work at Brief Encounters 1996, screening five films including Girls' Night Out, Body Beautiful, Britannia and Famous Fred. She was back in Bristol in 2006 for a storyboard masterclass with her producer Les Mills, and again in 2008 as a special guest presenting the films that had inspired her.
Seven of her films have screened at Encounters across 25 years, four of them featuring Beryl, the Welsh Valleys housewife who first appeared in Girls' Night Out. Dreams & Desires won Best of British at Encounters 2006, and Affairs of the Art screened at Encounters 2021. One artist, one character, and a festival that has followed both for a quarter of a century.
