LetterboxdCharlotte Wells brought her very first short film, Tuesday, to Encounters 2016. It was the first festival to select her work, and the first she attended in person as a filmmaker. Encounters selected each new film that followed: Laps at Encounters 2017, Blue Christmas at Encounters 2018. No other festival has programmed all three of her shorts.
Her debut feature Aftersun won the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer and swept seven British Independent Film Awards. It screened at the 30th edition in 2025, with Wells recording a special introduction for the screening, and Tuesday screened again too. Back where it all started.
