Yearning for escape and adventure, a young boy named Max runs away from home and sails to an island filled with creatures that take him in as their king. Wild The Wild Things Are is a frequently beguiling, evocative adaptation of Maurice Sendak's 1963 children's book of the same name, directed with vision and heart by maverick Spike Jonze from a script co-written by acclaimed novelist Dave Eggers. Did you know? Spike Jonze has continued to work in short film throughout his career, most famously with music videos and adverts. Encounters have screened a number of his shorts over the years, including a specially selected retrospective programme in 2011.
