Shane Meadows was in Bristol in 2002 to present a programme of his own short films at the BAFTA Short Film Paradise, having already made more than 50 shorts using borrowed cameras and friends as actors. He came back in 2003 for a Film School session on his writing partnership with Paul Fraser, and again in 2004, when the programme noted that "whilst he has gone onto feature film success, most recently with Dead Man's Shoes, Shane Meadows is an addicted short filmmaker."
Northern Soul screened in the UK competition at Brief & Animated Encounters 2004, and Where's the Money Ronnie? at Encounters 2007, where Meadows appeared in conversation with Royston Tan. The 2007 catalogue described the pairing as "two filmmakers with more in common than you'd think."
