Anthony Minghella

Anthony Minghella's Play, an adaptation of a Samuel Beckett short play starring Alan Rickman, Kristin Scott Thomas and Juliet Stevenson, screened at Brief & Animated Encounters 2000. He came to Bristol in person in 2004 to deliver the Brief Lecture on the opening day of the 10th edition. The 2004 programme described him as one of "two UK luminaries of world filmmaking" alongside Mike Figgis.

The 2008 catalogue, following his death, paid tribute: "the late Anthony Minghella wrote a typically eloquent piece about how cinema allows you, for whatever period of time, to occupy someone else's shoes." That year's programme was presented in his memory. Minghella won the Academy Award for Best Director for The English Patient in 1997.
