Brief & Animated Encounters 2002

290 films from 34 countries are recorded in the archive for this edition, with 5 award winners.

2002 was a double-festival year. In April, Animated Encounters 2002 welcomed Matt Groening — creator of The Simpsons and Futurama — as special guest for Desert Island Flicks, hosted by Phill Jupitus. The festival introduced its first competitive submissions and was named the UK's nominated festival for the European Cartoon d'Or. Belgian animation, Cal Arts experimental work, and Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted programme featured alongside a full Brit Pix showcase including the BAFTA-winning Dog by Suzie Templeton. In November, the eighth Brief Encounters introduced the Four Day Film School, a programme of seminars and masterclasses that would become a festival hallmark. Shane Meadows presented a BAFTA Short Film Paradise session showcasing his extensive short film work, and Alan Yentob delivered the inaugural Brief Lecture.
